Still no cash cattle trade has developed. Boxed beef prices are higher: choice up $1.34 ($359.33) and select up $0.33 ($357.51) with a movement of 78 loads (52.90 loads of choice, 5.14 loads of select, 12.17 loads of trim and 8.20 loads of ground beef).

And once again, in alignment with the direction of the live cattle complex, the feeder cattle contracts also traded lower Wednesday. Until the live cattle complex trades higher, the feeder cattle complex will likely continue to trade in a cautious, lower manner.

Traders continue to push the lean hog complex higher, with not a lot of fundamental support behind their ambitions. Both cash prices and pork cutout values have been lax this week, but even so, traders continue to aggressively push the contracts.

The USDA said inspections of corn, soybeans, and wheat for export all rose week to week during the seven days ending on January 8. Corn inspections improved to 1.49 million metric tons from 1.32 million a week earlier. The agency report said that’s higher than the 1.44 million tons that were inspected during the same week last year. Soybean assessments were reported at 1.53 million metric tons, up from just over 984,000 tons the previous week and the 1.36 million tons inspected at the same point last year. 

Wheat examinations for overseas delivery jumped to 317,400 metric tons, up from 183,000 the previous week. That was narrowly higher than the total inspected during the same week a year earlier. Since the start of the marketing year, USDA has inspected 28.4 million metric tons of corn for export, 17.9 million metric tons of soybeans, and wheat assessments since the start of the marketing year totaled 15.6 million metric tons.

He said this solution could use 2.4 billion additional bushels of corn annually.

Outside markets for Tuesday were mixed, with a higher U.S. dollar for the eleventh time in the past 13 sessions as Tuesday's CPI reading was steady at 2.7% year-over-year inflation. Energy prices were firm for the fourth straight session amid growing turmoil in Iran and President Trump renewing tariff threats against countries that trade with Iran. Equity markets were lower on profit-taking amid record highs for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&amp;P 500.

The live cattle complex stepped higher into Tuesday's close as traders were pleased to see boxed beef prices stronger again today, and are feeling at ease knowing corn prices are projected to remain affordable through 2026 -- as evidenced by Monday's WASDE report. No substantial cash cattle trade has developed yet, and with the futures market trading slightly higher, there's a good chance trade will again be delayed until late in the week. No asking prices have been established either. Boxed beef prices are higher: choice up $0.91 ($358.02) and select up $0.99 ($359.04) with a movement of 93 loads (61.65 loads of choice, 4.78 loads of select, 18.96 loads of trim and 7.78 loads of ground beef).

With corn prices anticipated to remain affordable through 2026, the feeder cattle complex was sporting a noteworthy $4.00 to $5.00 rally through the bulk of Tuesday's session. Feed costs have remained in feeders' favor over the last year as overall it's been affordable, but with feeder cattle prices so high, buyers need that guarantee as their breakevens on these calves is risky and if feed prices were to grow more expensive, a lot of people could be in a tough position given how much they are simply paying for the calves and feeders they desire to feed out.

Following the slight technical downturn in which the lean hog complex has seen over the last three days, the market was again trading higher as traders are no longer up against immediate resistance pressure. It still remains a tough fundamental position for the marketplace as pork cutout values were again lower and as there hasn't been hardly any trade in the cash hog market -- meaning that today's slight uptick was solely a technical decision.

Kansas currently holds the highest number of confirmed bird flu infections in the United States, with recent outbreaks in two northeast counties pushing the state’s total to more than 400,000 affected birds.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the surge in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has impacted four commercial operations and six backyard flocks across the state. The most significant loss occurred in Pottawatomie County, where a commercial egg-laying facility reported 380,000 birds affected by the virus.

In neighboring Nemaha County, officials recently confirmed the virus in a commercial gamebird flock of more than 4,000 birds. The USDA reports that 65 flocks have been impacted nationwide as the virus continues to spread through migratory bird patterns.

Despite the high number of poultry infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that the risk to the general public remains low. While the federal government has recorded 71 human cases of bird flu across the country, none have been identified in Kansas.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation, advising poultry owners to implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent further spread between commercial and wild populations.

The winner of this year’s award is Max, a four-year-old Border Collie owned by John, Charla, and Brynley Enns of Oklahoma. Max fills a number of roles on the farm, but his primary occupation is herding cattle. His assistance is valuable for John, who’s disabled and uses a mobility scooter. “I can’t imagine doing this without Max,” said John Enns. “Max is not only a working dog, but also great with the family.” After a long day of herding boisterous cattle on mostly hilly terrain, Max often accompanies John and Charla to pick up daughter Brynley from school.

USDA issues January WASDE report

March corn down 24 1/4 cents per bushel, March soybeans were down 13 1/2 cents, March KC wheat was down 3 1/2 cents, March Chicago wheat was down 6 cents and March Minneapolis wheat was down 1 1/4 cents.

Corn, soybeans and wheat all fell hard at midday following the shockingly bearish yield, production, stocks and acreage reports from the USDA. Corn and soy yields hit records, with corn production and December 1 stocks reaching the same milestone. Harvested corn acres also surged by an unexpected 1.3 million acres, while both soybean and wheat ending stocks also rose.

The live cattle complex was mostly higher moving into Monday's closing bell, as traders were pleased to see that after Friday's close, the fed cash cattle market did see higher prices in the South. It seems as though traders have been reluctant to overly advance the contracts without seeing more robust fundamental support. Monday's WASDE report shared mostly supportive news for the cattle and beef markets of 2026. Beef production for 2026 was increased by 10 million pounds as carcass weights continue to grow bigger. Beef imports for 2026 were increased by 75 million pounds as shipments from Oceania and South America are expected to continue. Beef exports for 2026 were decreased by 60 million pounds as the price of beef remains a limiting export factor. Boxed beef prices are higher: choice up $1.64 ($357.27) and select up $3.17 ($355.34) with a movement of 22 loads (14.54 loads of choice, 3.46 loads of select, zero loads of trim and 3.95 loads of ground beef).

The feeder cattle complex also traded mostly higher into Monday's close, despite the fact that some of the furthest deferred months were trading slightly lower. Much like the live cattle complex, the feeder cattle complex again seems willing to advance the contracts -- but is hungry to see more fundamental support as the market is facing some new resistance. Thankfully feeder cattle demand was strong last week and hopefully buyers will meet sales with the same level of enthusiasm as they did last week.

The lean hog complex continued to trade lower as the market simply hasn't seen enough fundamental support for traders to feel comfortable pushing the market back up to its resistance threshold. Last week packers weren't very aggressive in the cash market, so one would assume they'll need to be more active this week. But so far they aren't showing much interest.

Experts say shifting political priorities and partisan divides have complicated efforts to craft a broad farm policy package that addresses commodity supports, conservation, nutrition and rural development. Without a full farm bill, many programs are funded through short-term fixes, delaying long-term planning for producers. While the screwworm hasn’t yet been detected in the U.S., rapid reporting and early intervention remain critical to preventing spread, officials said. Row crop markets ratcheted moderately higher through the first full trading week of 2026, on much higher volume compared to the Holiday weeks, as was expected to be the case. Trade was subdued on Friday, which was not surprising to see with a flurry of USDA data due out on Monday morning, which will set the tone for the first quarter of 2026 and shed light on what to expect for crop prices. Outside markets continued to be mostly positive to close the week, with equities heading higher despite a mixed December labor report, which showed weak job creation, but lower overall unemployment as compared to the prior report. Energy markets finished the week with a sharp turn higher, specifically for crude oil futures, which hit their highest mark in over a month, primarily on growing unrest in Iran, combined with the ongoing situation in Venezuela. The U.S. Dollar Index, meanwhile, is higher now in ten of the past eleven sessions, also trading to the highest level in a month. Lastly, the Supreme Court on Friday chose not to issue a ruling on the tariff case, as had been reported as a possibility through the week.

Although the fed cash cattle market has shown traders that the market's trend is most likely going to be higher, the live cattle contracts slowly traded lower through Friday's session. Bids were on the table for the fed cash cattle market, with offers of $232 live being offered in Texas, Kansas and Nebraska. So far, feedlot managers appear firm in their asking price of $235 to $237 for live cattle, and $367 or more in the North. No new trade has developed today following the light business that developed on Thursday in the North, where dressed cattle traded at mostly $365, which is $5.00 higher than the previous week's weighted average. Boxed beef prices are lower: choice down $1.55 ($355.24) and select down $0.62 ($351.44) with a movement of 86 loads (67.09 loads of choice, 4.94 loads of select, 3.90 loads of trim and 10.36 loads of ground beef).

And once again, in keeping with the same trend as the live cattle complex, the feeder cattle contracts also traded lower throughout Friday's session. And unless the live cattle complex turns higher, the feeder cattle contracts will likely stay on the lower-side too.

The lean hog complex traded mixed on Friday, as the nearby contracts dipped lower, while the far-deferred contracts traded slightly higher. Absorbing the behavior of the lean hog complex takes a mixed approach, as one could logically point to the uptick in pork cutout values and say that prices should be trading higher. However, when you look at the futures complex and note the resistance pressure the market is facing, we see there hasn't been enough widespread, stable fundamental support this week to encourage traders to challenge that technical barrier.

A coalition of more than 70 biofuel and agricultural organizations sent a letter to congressional leadership calling for immediate passage of legislation to allow the year-round nationwide sales of an American-made E15 fuel blend. It would benefit drivers with savings of ten to 30 cents per gallon and improve markets for American farmers. “The USDA projects a record 16.8-billion-bushel corn harvest in 2025, up roughly 13 percent from 2024, which intensifies pressure on corn prices and farm incomes,” the groups wrote.

 “Expanding E15 access is one of the most immediate and practical ways to address this imbalance.” The groups point out that when it’s fully-scaled, year-round, nationwide E15 is poised to create new domestic demand for billions of bushels of corn and sorghum, help stabilize markets, support farmers, and deliver consumer savings at the pump. The letter was led by Growth Energy, the American Farm Bureau, the National Corn Growers Association, and the Renewable Fuels Association.

Groups continue pushing for year-round E15

Agricultural economists are predicting that the slide in the U.S. farm economy will stop in the new year. However, an indepentdent report said that doesn’t mean the ag economy will be whole again. The December Ag Economists’ Monthly Monitor showed monthly sentiment is getting stronger, but there are challenges remaining, especially in the row crop sector. AgWeb said there’s “cautious optimism,” but most economists don’t believe that 2026 will usher in a strong rebound without relief from the high costs of inputs or stronger commodity demand in other markets. 

Fifty-four percent of the economists surveyed, said the economy is better than a month ago. Compared to last year, 42 percent say conditions are worse, and 33 percent say things are better. Looking ahead to the next year, 46 percent expect conditions won’t change, 38 percent expect things to improve, and 15 percent expect economic conditions to get worse.

Outside markets were again mixed influence on agriculture prices on Thursday, with higher energy futures but also a higher U.S. Dollar Index for the ninth time in the past ten sessions potentially taking some wind out of the wheat markets sails with a high degree of world competition to begin 2026. In macroeconomic news, reports are that the Supreme Court could potentially issue a ruling on the legality of the Trump administration's tariff efforts. The U.S. trade deficit of $29.4 billion for October was reported as a 16-year low on Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The live cattle complex traded mixed into Thursday's noon hour and traders reluctantly pushed the entire complex higher, but weren't exactly willing to do so in the nearby contracts until late in the session, as they wait to see what's going to develop fundamentally this week. Still no cash cattle trade has developed, but a single bid is currently on the table in Nebraska at $228. Asking prices are noted at $235 to $238 in the South but are still not clearly established in the North. Trade could begin to develop at any point in time now. Boxed beef prices are higher: choice up $2.42 ($356.70) and select up $2.47 ($351.75) with a movement of 115 loads (73.63 loads of choice, 12.35 loads of select, 4.07 loads of trim and 24.51 loads of ground beef).

The feeder cattle complex was trading in the exact opposite direction of the live cattle complex, as most of its nearby contracts were trading higher, but the deferred months (from August 2026 onward) were trading lower for the bulk of the session, but managed to finish fully higher. Demand in the countryside remains strong as buyers are busying filling orders, as the market was quiet over the last two weeks.

Seeming to be a bit braver today, the lean hog complex traded higher into Thursday's closing bell, despite technical pressure still being a barrier and pork demand still pulling the cutout value lower. The real test will come Friday, and whether or not traders can keep the contracts higher through the the close with minimal fundamental support.

Sinograin, China’s state-run commodity buyer, recently bought ten U.S. soybean cargoes. Three traders told Reuters that the world’s biggest buyer of soybeans is continuing to purchase the commodity from the United States following a late October trade truce. ‘The cargoes total almost 600,000 metric tons and will be shipped between March and May,” Reports said. “That timeframe happens to also be the peak season for Brazil, a rival supplier of the U.S.” 

The total amount of soybeans China has bought from the U.S. is estimated between 8.5 million and almost ten million tons. That number represents almost 80 percent of the 12 million metric tons that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said China had promised to purchase by February 28. In late November, reports cited a shipping schedule saying two cargoes would carry the first soybean shipments since May. However, those cargoes haven’t arrived yet as they aren’t on the customs website.

The blend rate, ethanol’s percentage of finished motor gasoline volume, is one indicator of gasoline blenders’ demand for ethanol in vehicle fuel. March 2025 data showed the U.S. average blend rate was 10.1 percent, the ninth-consecutive month above the implied minimum federal blend rate of ten percent. The 12-month moving average blend rate stood at 10.2 percent. 

The average blend rate has largely been at ten percent or higher since 2020. Increasing blend rates have helped maintain domestic ethanol consumption at a steady level despite reduced demand for finished motor gasoline. Since 2023, international demand for ethanol has steadily risen and provided additional support for U.S. ethanol fuel production. Elevated blend rates and rising ethanol exports both support growing demand for corn. To meet the March 2025 demand for fuel ethanol required about 465 million bushels of corn, a 60 million bushel increase over the monthly demand from ten years ago.

U.S. ethanol blend rate continues climbing

The Great Plains Growers Conference returns to return to St. Joseph this week, offering a three-day event dedicated to farming, community, and the stewardship of the land. 

The 2026 conference will be held from Jan. 8–10 on the campus of Missouri Western State University.

The program begins Thursday, Jan. 8, with a series of full-day workshops. These include CSA School, Small Farm Livestock management, and FSMA Training via the Produce Safety Alliance Growers Training Course. The sessions are designed to provide deep dives into foundational agricultural practices and safety regulations.

A highlight of this year’s event is the keynote address by Curtis Millsap, owner of Millsap Farms in Springfield, Missouri. His presentation, titled “Farming as a Sacred Trust: Building Community at the Intersection of Land, Food &amp; People,” will anchor the conference's mission of connecting sustainable agriculture with community well-being.

Following the workshops, Friday and Saturday will feature a diverse array of specialized conference tracks.

Row-crop futures recovered from a shaky Tuesday session to trader higher again Wednesday on a mix of technically influenced buying as well as perceived risk for the U.S. winter wheat crop amid well-above average temperatures for early January. Outside markets for Wednesday saw mixed equities, with the Dow Jones lower on profit-taking following a record setting run to start the week. Energy markets have moved lower over the past two sessions on President Trump's announcement that Venezuela will sell 50 million barrels of crude oil to the U.S. at market price, while Wednesday's Petroleum Status report showed U.S. crude oil stocks to already be 3% larger than the same point in 2024.

Traders continued to let the live cattle contracts trade in a moderately lower manner as the market needs to see more immediate fundamental support before traders will feel confident trading the contracts any higher. But even with the market's slight regression, the live cattle contracts are still currently trading above the market's 100-day moving average. A single bid of $232 is currently on the table in Kansas, but no trade has developed yet. Asking prices are firm in the South at $235 to $237, but are still not established in the North. Boxed beef prices are mixed: choice up $1.22 ($352.47) and select down $0.31 ($350.77) with a movement of 87 loads (63.12 loads of choice, 6.90 loads of select, 4.01 loads of trim and 13.04 loads of ground beef).

The feeder cattle complex also traded lower, seeming to simply follow the direction of the live cattle complex. Today's lower action is a technical decision, not a good representation of what's transpiring in the countryside, as feeder cattle prices were on fire both on Monday and Tuesday.

Although midday pork cutout values were a tick higher, the lean hog complex still traded lower as traders yearn to see more fundamental support. The market is running into some resistance pressure that is binding its upward momentum, and until something substantial develops fundamentally, the market could be pressured to trade sideways, if not somewhat lower.

Outside markets for Wednesday saw mixed equities, with the Dow Jones lower on profit-taking following a record setting run to start the week. Energy markets have moved lower over the past two sessions on President Trump's announcement that Venezuela will sell 50 million barrels of crude oil to the U.S. at market price, while Wednesday's Petroleum Status report showed U.S. crude oil stocks to already be 3% larger than the same point in 2024.LIVESTOCK:Traders continued to let the live cattle contracts trade in a moderately lower manner as the market needs to see more immediate fundamental support before traders will feel confident trading the contracts any higher. But even with the market's slight regression, the live cattle contracts are still currently trading above the market's 100-day moving average. A single bid of $232 is currently on the table in Kansas, but no trade has developed yet. Asking prices are firm in the South at $235 to $237, but are still not established in the North. Boxed beef prices are mixed: choice up $1.22 ($352.47) and select down $0.31 ($350.77) with a movement of 87 loads (63.12 loads of choice, 6.90 loads of select, 4.01 loads of trim and 13.04 loads of ground beef).The feeder cattle complex also traded lower, seeming to simply follow the direction of the live cattle complex. Today's lower action is a technical decision, not a good representation of what's transpiring in the countryside, as feeder cattle prices were on fire both on Monday and Tuesday.Although midday pork cutout values were a tick higher, the lean hog complex still traded lower as traders yearn to see more fundamental support. The American Farm Bureau submitted comments to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers. AFBF detailed the impact of WOTUS on farmers and elements that must be included in the new proposed rule to ensure it can withstand future legal challenges.

The group also wants clarification of when wetlands should fall under WOTUS, continued exclusion of prior converted cropland, and exclusion of ditches from WOTUS jurisdiction.

Proposed WOTUS rule brings certainty to farmers

Farmer sentiment weakened slightly in December as the Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer Index dropped three points to a reading of 136. Weakness in the barometer was attributable to a modest decline in producers’ long-term outlook, as the Future Expectations Index fell to 140, four points lower than the previous month. The Current Conditions Index was unchanged from November at 128. 

Angst about the prospects for U.S. soybean exports amid increasing competition from Brazil contributed to a slightly weaker outlook for the future among crop producers. Producers’ expectations for their farms’ financial performance changed little compared to November, as the Financial Performance Index rose just two points to 94. The Farm Capital Investment Index also increased two points to 58 in December. Even with the slight rise, 60 percent of producers said it was still a bad time to make large investments in their farms.

The clean fuels industry strengthened its foundation in 2025 behind record policy targets, new engine capabilities, and proven performance, setting expectations for continued growth in 2026. “Government agencies, fleets, manufacturers, and consumers in 2025 recognized that biodiesel and renewable diesel have stepped forward and taken a leadership position in fueling our nation’s transportation systems,” said Clean Fuels Alliance America CEO Donnell Rehagen. “Clean fuel use has grown dramatically in recent years, and for the first time, policymakers took full account of that growth.” 

Last year, for the first time in the history of the Renewable Fuel Standard, the EPA proposed robust biomass-based diesel volumes that accurately reflected the industry’s potential. EPA proposed a renewable volume obligation of 5.61 billion gallons for 2026, and a growth path of annual volume increases for 2027 and beyond. In doing so, EPA acknowledged the industry’s investments in production capacity and domestic feedstock supplies produced by U.S. farmers.

2025 was a solid year for biodiesel, renewable diesel success in 2026

USDA released details about how much row crop farmers will receive this year from a $12 billion aid program. However, U.S. soybean producers say the payments won’t help farmers hurt by low crop prices and trade disputes. Reports said while the aid is expected to help farmers get ready for next season, growers and agricultural economists say those payments will only cover a fraction of farm losses and won’t rescue the sagging U.S. farm economy. 

The one-time payments will go to growers who planted one of 19 covered commodity crops. “The highest per-acre payments will go to rice farmers, who could get $132.89 an acre,” Reports show. “Cotton farmers could get $117.35 an acre, and oats farmers could receive $81.75 an acre.” Meanwhile, farmers are eligible for $44.36 per corn acre, $30.88 per soybean acre, and $39.35 per wheat acre. The overall payment limit is $155,000 per entity or individual.

Does assistance favor rice and cotton producers?

March corn closed up 7 cents and May corn was up 6 1/2 cents. January soybeans closed up 17 3/4 cents and March soybeans were up 16 1/4 cents. March KC wheat closed up 5 3/4 cents, March Chicago wheat was up 6 cents, March Minneapolis wheat was up 1/2 cents.

It sure didn't take long for traders to return from holiday and swiftly reject the ugly price action seen through the New Years week, with soybeans leading the way with the strongest daily move for the March contract since Nov. 17. Corn and wheat futures were no exception to the buyer's market on Monday, putting in strong daily moves higher as well. Outside markets on Monday were mostly higher too, with energy stocks rising following the weekend U.S. military operation in Venezuela. Safety investments such as gold were higher also. Lastly, crude oil, gasoline, and diesel futures were all higher as for the time being the market is not expecting a sudden influx of supply from Venezuela following this weekend's regime shift, especially amid a pause in output increases from OPEC members reported over the weekend as well.

The live cattle complex continued to trade higher into the new week following last week's surge. But more than anything, traders seem to be hitting the ground running to support the complex and eyeing the fact that the market's long-term trajectory is bullish. Friday's advancement above the market's 100-day moving average was a significant move, as that's been a challenging threshold that the market hasn't traded over for the last two months. New showlists appear to be somewhat higher in Kansas, but higher in Texas, and Nebraska/Colorado. Boxed beef prices are higher: choice up $4.06 ($354.03) and select up $2.63 ($349.55) with 57 loads (41.75 loads of choice, 4.52 loads of select, 4.31 loads of trim and 6.48 loads of ground beef).

With the support of the live cattle complex, the feeder cattle contracts traded substantially higher as support seems to be the market's overarching theme. It will be especially interesting to watch feeder cattle sales early this week, as the last real test seen in the countryside was the week before Christmas, and since then, the futures market has gained substantial ground.

Like the cattle complex, the lean hog contracts also traded fully higher into Monday's closing bell, as the market has been well supported thus far by trader interest. It's also helpful that pork cutout values were up $1.88 this morning, which is mainly being driven by the belly's $6.08 increase.

Exports of bulk, unprocessed commodities like soybeans and corn, valued at $74.2 billion, generated an additional $66.2 billion in economic activity in 2023. Including the value of the exports themselves, U.S. agricultural exports generated a total economic output of $362.4 billion in 2023. Put another way, every $1 of U.S. agricultural products exported generated a total of $2.06 of domestic economic activity, on average.
