NODAWAY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Friday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Ford Machs Van driven by a 32-year-old Maryville man was northbound on MO 148 three miles north of Maryville.

The Van rear-ended a 2020 Chevy Silverado driven by a 49-year-old Pickering man who was stopped in traffic attempting to turn west onto County Road 220.

Nodaway County EMS transported both drivers to Mosaic in Maryville. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

2 Mo. men hospitalized after rear-end crash

The annual art fair at the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph is coming up tomorrow. 

Executive Director Eric Fuson says the event will be out on the lawn of the museum throughout the day tomorrow 

"We've got about 17 artists that are going to be out with all their wears and their creations," Fuson says on the KFEQmunnity show.  "And then we have bands all day, about every hour we've got another band coming on, so we've got a lot of great local talent and a band from Kansas City as well."  

Fuson says the types of music people will hear is a wide variety 

"We kind of do a little bit of everything so, we're going to start off with the Renaissance Brass guys, there's a group from right here in town, some of them are Missouri Western professors and former professors, and they just get together and play," Fuson explains.  "So, they're going to start off with some Renaissance music and then move into some Beatles, all on brass instruments, which is actually amazing and sounds fantastic out there on the patio." 

The first act will take the stage at 10am with performances running until 7pm. Food trucks, like Kona Ice, will also be on hand 

Fuson says artist vendors will also be on hand, with many of them being from around the St. Joseph and Kansas City area.  

"They really are kind of the heart and soul of the art community around (the area), they all create their own work," Fuson says.  "It's a jury thing so we really kind of look and see whose making good stuff, so there's really good things to choose from." 

The event runs from 10am until 8pm tomorrow.  It is free to attend.

Maryville Downtown Summer Shop Hop Set for June 7

CLARINDA, Iowa — A Villisca-based recovery program is seeking financial support from Page County to provide wrap-around substance abuse prevention services.

This week, the Page County Board of Supervisors heard a presentation from Richard Mullen, founder of Resilient Recovery Counseling, who requested up to $3,000 per month from the county’s opioid settlement funds. The proposed three-year plan would dedicate $108,000 to deliver 64 hours of monthly support services to Page County residents and students.

The program’s services would complement existing treatment facilities like Zion Recovery Services and Waubonsie Mental Health Center by addressing non-clinical, non-reimbursable needs.

Mullen emphasized that the initiative is not traditional therapy but rather prevention-focused outreach that can make a critical difference—particularly among families and youth affected by multi-generational addiction or environments with high drug exposure.

Mullen also noted that Montgomery County approved a similar funding arrangement late last month. He hopes to replicate its success in Page County, working from shared office space in Clarinda and partnering with local law enforcement to assist individuals pre- and post-incarceration.

His plan includes monthly reports to the supervisors for accountability and transparency. If approved later this month, services could begin as early as July.

Cruzin' Clarinda Car Show Postponed to June 14 Due to Weather

HOPKINS, Mo. — A heated dispute over truck parking in Hopkins has been put on hold—because city officials can’t access the only known copy of a relevant ordinance believed to be locked inside a city safe.

During Monday evening’s Hopkins Board of Aldermen meeting, neighbors Tim Hoepker and Mike Stump clashed over truck and trailer parking along West Thompson Street. Hoepker expressed frustration that Stump’s parking makes it difficult to access his barn. Stump argued that the area had long been designated for truck parking, adding that he had “rocked it several times.”

Tensions rose until Mayor Matt Wray stepped in to calm the discussion, as board members reviewed available maps and documents. Several officials had driven by the area following last month’s introduction to the issue.

The real issue? The only official copy of the relevant ordinance is reportedly locked inside a city safe—with a broken handle and no known access code.

City staff did locate an unsigned, undated proposed ordinance, believed to be from 2012, which prohibits parking of any commercial vehicle or truck over one ton or exceeding 20 feet in length or 6.5 feet in width on city streets—except during loading and unloading. Violators would face a $250 fine per occurrence. The ordinance draft does not reference any designated truck parking zones.

City employee Chris Bird said he plans to contact Maryville Glass and Lock to open the safe.

Mayor Wray suggested ordering signs to reflect the ordinance once it’s confirmed. The board agreed to table the issue until the correct ordinance version could be reviewed.

The board also addressed changes to its water service policy:

As of June 2, 61 properties are listed for delinquent water bills. 31 are just one month behind, while 17 are four or more months overdue.

City staff remain hopeful they can soon access the ordinance safe and settle the ongoing truck parking controversy.

</li><li>Service will now be shut off after two months of nonpayment.
</li><li>After three months of no payment or contact, properties will be added to the delinquent list and flagged for potential liens.

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Nodaway County has been awarded the Missouri Blue Shield designation by the Missouri Department of Public Safety, county officials announced this week.

The Missouri Blue Shield Program, launched by Governor Mike Kehoe in January, recognizes local governments that make “significant efforts to reduce crime, foster law enforcement collaboration, and build strong community partnerships for public safety,” according to a county news release.

Communities that receive the designation may become eligible for state grant funding to support law enforcement training and equipment.

The designation is reviewed annually to ensure communities continue meeting the program’s objectives.

The Nodaway County Commission celebrated the recognition in a joint statement, saying, “This designation reaffirms that our sheriff’s department provides the highest level of law enforcement while qualifying the county for grant opportunities provided by the governor’s office through this program.”

Nodaway County Sheriff Austin Hann also expressed appreciation for the award, emphasizing that it highlights the department’s dedication to public safety.

The city of Maryville previously received the Blue Shield designation in April.

Nodaway County Earns Missouri Blue Shield Designation

Northwest Missouri State University’s summer enrollment has topped 5,500 students for the second consecutive year, according to the institution’s summer census.

Northwest's enrollment total for the summer shows 1,910 undergraduate students and 3,592 graduate students, a total of 5,502 students on campus.  That number is a 5% decline from a year ago, but the university does report it does still remain consistent with totals over the past five years. 

Graduate student enrollment declined by just under 8% (7.6%) this summer.  The total of graduate students spiked a year ago to 3,886, which marked the first time in Northwest history that the graduate student total exceeded 3,000 students.  Northwest attributes the decline to fewer international students.

Northwest also reports that 83% of undergraduates are enrolled in online only courses, which is common with students being employed or being away from campus on internships, while 70% of graduate students are enrolled in online only courses.  68% that are enrolled are Missouri residents while the international student population this summer declined to 78%.

The number of credit hours that undergraduate students are enrolled in however though has increased, jumping 4.5% to 13,073 credit hours.  Overall, Northwest students are enrolled in 32,571 hours this summer. 

“It is great to see so many Northwest students engaged in coursework again this summer," Dr. Allison Hoffmann, the University’s associate provost for enrollment management and student success, said in a news release from the University. “Northwest’s summer academic offerings allow students the opportunity to continue progressing toward their degree or credential in a timely manner.”

NWMSU summer enrollment tops 5,500 for second consecutive year

St. Joseph's Noah Cameron pitched another gem, but the St. Louis Cardinals hit the Kansas City Royals bullpen hard, and in extra innings the Cardinals took game one of a doubleheader, winning 6-5 in 10 innings at Busch Stadium.&nbsp;

Jonathan India got the Royals started off on the right foot, getting Cameron the lead early and on the first pitch, hitting a leadoff home run into left field to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead.&nbsp; In the bottom half of the inning, Cameron quickly worked through the St. Louis lineup,&nbsp; retiring the first three batters on 12 pitches, striking out Brendan Donovan to end the inning.&nbsp;

Cameron's roughest inning of the game was the second inning, which started with back to back walks, throwing 25 pitches, but still got out unscathed. The Royals extended the lead in the fourth inning behind back to back doubles, the first coming from Salvador Perez, before top prospect Jac Caglianone notched his first major league hit and RBI, driving in Perez with a double down the right field foul line.&nbsp;

Vinnie Pasquantino singled in the fifth inning, scoring Bobby Witt Jr, to push the Royals ahead more, giving Cameron a 3-0 lead, which he exited with after six innings of work as manager Matt Quatraro went to his bullpen, calling on John Schreiber for the seventh inning.&nbsp;

With his six scoreless innings of work, Cameron becomes the 1st pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela (1981) to spin six plus innings pitched with one run or fewer allowed in each of his first five MLB starts.&nbsp; Cameron struck out three and walked two, also giving up just two hits in the start.&nbsp;

St. Louis cut the lead to one against Schreiber in the seventh.&nbsp; Willson Contreras doubled and&nbsp;Iván Herrera singled, putting runners on the corners, before Nolan Arenado grounded into a forceout where the Royals were unable to turn a double play, Contreras scoring and Arenado being safe at first as Herrera was out at second.&nbsp; Yohel Pozo later in the inning hit a sacrifice fly scoring Arenado.&nbsp;

In the eighth, the Cardinals took the lead, against Taylor Clarke who had seemed to find his groove after some rough seasons, Herrera giving the Redbirds the lead on a two run home run to center field driving in Donovan and himself.&nbsp;

Kansas City forced extra innings though against Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley.&nbsp; &nbsp;Michael Massey singled, and was pinch ran for by Nick Loftin, which was followed by a single by Kyle Isbel, moving Loftin to third base.&nbsp; India's deep fly ball to left field scored Loftin to tie the game, and moved Isbel to second base, allowing Helsley to intentionally walk Witt Jr.&nbsp; &nbsp;Maikel Garcia popped out to end the inning.&nbsp;

After St. Louis did nothing in the bottom half of the inning, Garcia started the 10th at second base, and was promptly driven in for the Royals lead by Pasquantino on a single, though the Royals could do no more and Carlos Estévez was brought on to try to earn the save, with Pozo starting the bottom half at second for the Cardinals.&nbsp;

Lars Nootbaar's single&nbsp; moved Pozo to third base, and Pozo later scored in the next at bat, Nootbaar moving to second, on a groundout by Masyn Winn.&nbsp;&nbsp;Estévez intentonally walked Donovan, setting up the force out at any base, but Contreras singled into left field, bringing Nootbaar home for the walk off win.&nbsp;

JoJo Romero earned the win in relief for the Cardinals, improving to 2-3 on the season, pitching one inning and giving up one hit with one unearned run, striking out one.&nbsp;&nbsp;Estévez blew his third save, falling to 2-1, recording just one out, giving up two hits and two runs, just one earned, and walking one.&nbsp;

At the plate, Nootbaar (2-5, 1 R), Contreras (2-4, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB), and Herrera (2-3, 2 RBI, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 BB) led the way for St. Louis.&nbsp; For the Royals, Pasquantino was 4-for-5 with two RBIs, while India (2-4, 2 RBI, 1 HR, 1 R) and Perez (2-5, 1 R) also helped in the loss.&nbsp;

Kansas City and St. Louis wrap up their series in game two of the doubleheader this evening.&nbsp; Cole Ragans (2-3, 4.53 ERA) takes the mound for the Royals, it’ll be Ragans’ first start since May 16, when he allowed four runs to these Cardinals in five innings at Kauffman Stadium.&nbsp; For the Cardinals, Matthew Liberatore (3-4, 3.08 ERA) will start.

Royals can't back Cameron's strong start, fall 6-5 to Cardinals in extras

ELMO, Mo. — A Clarinda man was injured in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon in Nodaway County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. on Route KK at 135th Street, approximately one mile north of Elmo. Authorities report that a 28-year-old male from Elmo, driving a 2008 Dodge Magnum, was heading southbound on Route KK when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to cross the center line.

The front driver’s side of the Dodge struck the rear driver’s side of a northbound 2008 Chevy 1500 pickup, driven by a 66-year-old Clarinda man. Both vehicles came to rest off the east side of the road.

The Clarinda man, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained moderate injuries and was transported by Nodaway County Ambulance to Clarinda Regional Health Center. The driver of the Dodge was not injured.

Responding agencies included the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office, Nodaway County Ambulance, and the Elmo Fire Department.

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. — Golf cars will soon be street-legal in Nebraska City, following a unanimous vote by the Nebraska City City Council earlier this week.

The council approved an ordinance amendment allowing golf cars to operate on certain streets—joining UTVs, ATVs, and side-by-sides already permitted within city limits. Residents can begin registering their golf cars immediately, with the ordinance taking effect on June 18.

Permitted routes include Business Highway 75, old Highway 2, and Central Avenue from 11th Street to 4th Street, the city’s historic downtown corridor.

The amendment also addresses safety concerns specific to golf cars.

Holt County Authorities Investigating Suspicious Death Near Craig

The 21st Gregg Lynn Radio-A-Thon broadcast on Joe Town 107.5 - to support Camp Quality is coming up tomorrow. 

Lynn will broadcast live from 6am to 5pm from Sav On Furniture Mart in St. Joseph, raising money for Camp Quality, a camp for children with cancer. 

Lynn says the camp provides a week’s worth of fun activities for the kids. 

"George Richmond, whose passed away since, always told us their goal is to not tell the kids no," Lynn says on the KFEQmunnity show.  "If the kid wants to do something, they're going to do it, if they want to go swimming, if they want to go whatever, fishing, they're going to do it." 

The camp recently moved from its original site at Camp Farwesta near Stewartsville, to a camp near Excelsior Springs.  

Lynn says camp is the biggest expense for the campers 

"Renting the campground and then insurance if you can imagine, hey I want to put a camp on and all these kids have cancer the insurance has just got to be crazy, and so it costs somewhere around $1,500 per camper," Lynn explains. 

Lynn says the Radio A Thon is designed to share the stories of these children, while also sharing just how much fun camp is 

"When you first hear about Camp Quality you think oh my gosh it's a camp with a bunch of kids with cancer and oh my gosh it's going to be so depressing, and it is the exact opposite of that," Lynn says.  "It is like the most fun place you would ever go, and if you get a chance to go out there, if they're having a media day or whatever that's how I first got involved I went out for a media day, you will find out it is the most fun place you would ever spend a couple hours at." 

The Radio A Thon will be broadcast from 6am to 5pm on JoeTown 107.5, with Lynn live from Sav On all day. 

Donations can be made at Sav On, online, or by calling the pledge line. Vogel’s food truck will also be on site during the event for lunch. 

Later this month. Lynn will also host an annual 5k. 

Lynn says the Happy Camper Scamper is another way to raise money for Camp Quality, while also getting some exercise 

"You can run, you can walk, you can take your dog and put your dog in a stroller, we don't care whatever you want to do, and we'll sit there an hour if it's going to take you an hour to walk it I don't care, because it's just a fun day to go out and do something else to raise money for Camp Quality and get out and enjoy the parkway system," Lynn says. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Toyota Corolla driven by 49-year-old Princeton man was southbound on U.S. 65 one mile northeast of Tindall. The car reportedly crossed the center line and collided with a northbound 2023 Ford Maverick driven by a 54-year-old Trenton man.

EMS transported a 10-year-old male passenger in the car to Children's Mercy. EMS transported the driver of the Toyota and a 73-year-old female passenger in the car to Wright Memorial Hospital. The driver of the pickup was not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

The car reportedly crossed the center line and collided with a northbound 2023 Ford Maverick driven by a 54-year-old Trenton man.EMS transported a 10-year-old male passenger in the car to Children's Mercy. EMS transported the driver of the Toyota and a 73-year-old female passenger in the car to Wright Memorial Hospital. The driver of the pickup was not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

legislative reporter says a decision at the end of the Missouri legislature’s
regular session could cast a long shadow on the special session that is underway
in Jefferson City.

Director, Alisa Nelson, says the decision by House Budget Committee chair, Dirk
Deaton of Seneca, to kill House Bill 19, the $513 million capital improvement
bill, set a sour tone that just might carry over.

“I mean the session
was going so well until that point,” Nelson tells KFEQmmunity. “I mean in terms
of the personalities and the dynamics and things and all the different
lawmakers working together in a pretty bipartisan fashion to some degree. It
was going so well until then and then it just really went downhill after that.”

Nelson says
tension built in the Missouri Senate even further when the House approved a tax
incentive package for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals just after killing the
capital improvement bill. Several senators questioned why House leadership
could kill a bill funding capital improvements throughout the state, claiming
the state needed to be careful about spending, then turn around and approve tax
breaks for the two professional sports teams.

Then, Senate
Republicans picked up a rarely used parliamentary procedure to cut off debate
and force a vote on two controversial issues – sending the abortion issue back
to voters and removing paid sick leave provisions from the voter-approved
minimum wage law. The move further angered Senate Democrats.

The Senate
adjourned two days early. The House adjourned a day early.

Nelson points to
the decision by Deaton to bypass HB 19 and not bring it to a vote as the
turning point. She says Deaton’s decision to kill the capital improvement
package took nearly everyone by surprise and angered many.

“So, there was definitely
some bad blood that occurred because of the timing of all of this and I think
that bad blood and that friction and all of that will spill over into this
special session.”

Nelson says Gov. Mike
Kehoe must find a way to cut through that tension and bring the legislature
back together if he is to steer the Chiefs/Royals incentives through the
General Assembly.

The special
session will also consider a much scaled down version of HB 19 along with tax breaks
for St. Louis area homeowners who suffered property damage during recent severe
storms.

 Northwest Missouri State University is again offering youth an opportunity to play video games with peers during two esports summer camps in July on campus.

Northwest will host an Esports day camp for middle school and high school students from Monday, July 14, through Friday, July 18.&nbsp; Camp sessions are 9am to 11:30 a.m. each day in the Esports Lab at the J.W. Jones Student Union, the cost is $75 per person.

The University will also host an overnight camp, beginning with check-in at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, and ending at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 25, the cost is $160 per person. The overnight camp provides participants an opportunity to experience campus residence halls and dining services while developing skills needed to be recruited as an esports athlete. 

During both camps, attending boys and girls will participate in fun, team-oriented gaming activities while learning skills related to communication, team development, problem-solving and best online practices.

“It gives students a great opportunity to connect with like-minded peers,” Andrew Murphy, Northwest’s esports director, said in a news release from the university. “The issue sometimes with gaming is that when you’re playing from home, it’s really hard to connect with people, even if you’re playing with people online. The camp offers an opportunity to play games together and do things together.”

FALLS CITY, Neb. — An attempt to recall Falls City Mayor Mark Harkendorff has officially failed, after no petitions were submitted by Friday’s deadline.

Richardson County Clerk Mary Eickhoff confirmed that no signed recall petitions were turned in by 5:00 p.m. on May 30, the final day for submission.

Kaylie Ractliffe, the organizer of the recall effort, had launched the petition alleging unprofessional behavior by Mayor Harkendorff, including insulting city workers, contributing to the resignation of all city linemen, and disregarding public input. Ractliffe claimed the mayor's conduct had reflected poorly on city leadership.

The recall effort required a minimum of 475 valid signatures from registered Falls City voters to trigger a special election. Without submission, the recall effort is now closed.

Recall Effort Against Falls City Mayor Fails

CAINSVILLE, Mo. — A Cainsville resident has been sentenced to three years in the Missouri Department of Corrections following a guilty plea to second-degree burglary.

Bryan Tyler Wolfe appeared before Circuit Judge Matthew Krohn last week and admitted to unlawfully entering a residence near Route WW and Highway V with the intent to steal. According to authorities, Wolfe and another individual stole a bundle of copper wire from the property.

The case marks the conclusion of an investigation into the burglary and highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address property crimes in the area.

Cainsville Man Sentenced to Three Years for Burglary

A community member has stepped up and given the generous gift of free tickets to the St. Joseph Mustangs game on Saturday. 

Mustangs General Manager and Owner Ky Turner says in 2022 an anonymous donor gifted tickets to games, and wanted to do it again this year, donating 500 tickets to the Mustangs. 

Turner says the whole intent behind this is to do something nice, and hopefully have the domino effect, influencing others to go do something nice as well 

"We're very appreciative of the people involved in making this possible, but then we're also very appreciative the people who take the challenge," Turner tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  "We heard so many great stories, whether it's just holding the door open for somebody, I think one person said they went to a garage sale and they bought some items for some people who couldn't afford an item and so they did something nice and purchased it for them." 

Turner says when the offer went up on social media, fans were very receptive 

"We surpassed that 500 in under the first hour, and so I actually made a phone call and I haven't made this edit online yet, I just went to the person who made that donation and I said hey this went quicker than what we thought, so they've actually upped their donation of how many tickets they're going to provide," Turner explains. "So, we're kind of reserving that number back so I can just tell them once we get there, and they say ok that's enough." 

Turner says it feels good to be able to use Mustangs baseball as a platform for this. 

"We're so appreciative of the team effort, whether it's the team on the field and playing the game but then the team off the field in our community and just doing nice things there," Turner says.  "It's really neat to use Mustangs baseball as that platform and just the domino effect it can have in our community, and St. Joe is just a wonderful community, it's full of a lot of great people, and I don't think sometimes we realize how awesome St. Joe is and can be."

The cancellation follows Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe's formal call for a special legislative session set to begin Monday, June 2. As a result, Senator Rusty Black and Representative Jeff Farnan, who were slated to speak at the event, will be unable to attend due to their legislative duties in Jefferson City.

The Chamber has not announced a rescheduled date at this time. The Legislative Coffee is a regular event designed to give community members a chance to hear updates directly from state lawmakers and ask questions about current legislative issues.

Greater Maryville Chamber Cancels June 3 Legislative Coffee

SHENANDOAH, Iowa _ Shenandoah Mayor Roger McQueen is seeking a second term in office.

McQueen made the official announcement Monday morning. He was first elected in November 2021, succeeding longtime mayor Dick Hunt, who retired after serving four terms.

Reflecting on his time in office, McQueen said the early part of his term involved learning the ins and outs of city government. Now, he wants to build on that experience to help Shenandoah continue moving forward.

McQueen will appear on the November general election ballot as he seeks to continue his leadership and work on current and future city projects.
