SHENANDOAH, Iowa — Two Shenandoah properties are moving closer to new ownership, while a third will remain under city control—at least for now.

In a series of unanimous votes Tuesday evening, the Shenandoah City Council approved setting public hearings for July 22 at 6 p.m. to discuss the proposed sales of:

  1. 108 West Grant to Jake and Pam McGargill for $10
  2. 312 East Washington to Charles Edwards for $4,000

Edwards submitted the higher of two bids for the Washington Street property. However, a bid from Dennis Allely for a third property at 207 North Sycamore was unanimously rejected after zoning concerns emerged. Allely had planned to place a commercial trailer on the lot, prompting a legal clarification from City Attorney Mahlon Sorensen.

Allely ultimately withdrew his bid following the exchange.

Library Sunshade Project Sees Slow Progress

The council also approved a $63,555 pay application to Cormaci Construction for ongoing work on the Shenandoah Public Library’s sunshade project. Library Director Carrie Falk reported slow progress, noting that while some electrical work has been completed, the painting schedule remains unclear.

Falk expressed hope that the project would be finished ahead of the Shenfest celebration in September.

Major Wastewater Project Moves Forward

In other business, council members approved a pay application of more than $867,000 to All Purpose Construction for continued work on the city’s wastewater treatment plant expansion and renovation. The multi-phase project is among the largest infrastructure efforts currently underway in Shenandoah.

Tree Board Appointment

The council also unanimously reappointed Al Ruhde to a three-year term on the city’s tree board, recognizing his ongoing contributions to urban forestry efforts.
