
CHRISTIAN COUNTY— Two Missouri sheriff’s deputies were shot and killed overnight in southwest Missouri.
One shooting occurred during a traffic stop south of Highlandville on Monday in southwest Missouri, according to Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole.
Law enforcement searched for the suspect identified as 45-year-old Richard Bird.
Police found Bird's truck abandoned near Reeds Spring. Early Tuesday, after a heat signature was detected in the woods, deputies attempted an arrest.. Bird opened fire, striking three deputies.
One Christian County deputy was killed and two other deputies, from Christian and Webster counties, were wounded. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to the sheriff's office.. Law enforcement officers on the scene returned fire and the Bird was killed.
The deputy killed in the initial shooting has been identified as Deputy Gabriel Ramirez.
