Animal killed, another injured in hailstorm at Missouri zoo

SPRINGFIELD —The spring storm that brought large hail to Springfield caused considerable damage to the zoo. On their social media page the zoo reported. " Dickerson Park Zoo sustained significant damage from the hail storm on Tuesday, April 28. No guests or staff were injured."

"Zoo staff is sad to report the death of one animal: a 21-year-old female emu. A male rhea is under veterinary care at this time. All other animals are safe."

"We will open Thursday, April 30. Thank you to all staff and volunteers who are working right now to be ready for tomorrow. Please note: some small birds will be off exhibit until skylights are repaired. There is still much to be done, but please come visit. Thank you to those who have called or shared encouraging comments. It is so very much appreciated."
