PHELPS COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Saturday in Phelps County.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Hyundai Sonata driven by a 21-year-old Allen, Texas man was fleeing law enforcement westbound on Interstate 44 near Sugar Tree Road. The car traveled off the left side of the road, struck a cable barrier, went airborne and struck a bridge support pillar.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the county coroner's office. The driver was also not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The MSHP released no additional details and no longer releases names of accident victims.
