Last second Augustana touchdown downs MoWest in season opener

The Missouri Western State University Griffons lost a back-and-forth, non-conference battle at No. 23 Augustana, as the Vikings threw the game-winning touchdown with 10 seconds left for a&nbsp;30-26 victory.

MoWest struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Kane Donovan connected with Bryce Marcus III on a 44-yard pass, however the extra point attempt hit the right goalpost.&nbsp; Augustana quickly responded with a seven-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-6 lead.

The Vikings forced a safety on the following Griffons drive, as Donovan was sacked in the endzone, extending the Vikings' advantage.&nbsp; The second quarter, however, belonged to the Griffons. Early in the period, kicker Mason Grove drilled a 47-yard field goal to tie the game at 9-9 with 10:15 left in the half.

The Vikings put together an eight-play, 77-yard drive that reached the MoWest one-yard line,  but the Griffon defense came up big with a stop, forcing a turnover-on-downs.&nbsp; Later, Donovan struck again leading a 99-yard drive, this time hitting Michael Haggerty for a 19-yard touchdown to swing momentum back to the Griffons. Spencer Sprenger's extra-point capped off a 10-point quarter for the Griffons, giving them a 16-9 lead at halftime.

MoWest's opening drive to start the second half extended the lead to double digits, as Sprenger hit a 23-yard field goal.&nbsp;The Vikings responded with a run of 14 unanswered points, taking a 23-19 lead over MoWest early in the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Augustana lined up for a field goal attempt with 6:32 left in the fourth, but senior Grant Finley came up with a block, and Logan Clark returned it 54 yards to set up the drive.&nbsp; In quick work, running back Rickie Dunn carried the ball three straight times, punching it in for the score from five yards out to put the Griffons ahead 26-23 with 5:01 left in the fourth.

The Griffons were later forced into a three-and-out and had to punt, leaving 1:44 on the clock for the Vikings, giving Augustana a chance for a game-winning drive, which they seized with a 10-yard touchdown pass to take a 30-26 lead with 10 seconds left.

Donovan completed 15-of-27 for 226 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Marcus III was the top target, collecting two passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Haggerty finished with 27 yards on two receptions and a touchdown.

MoWest (0-1) will have an early bye week on September 6 before returning for its home opener at Spratt Stadium against Missouri S&amp;T on September 13.

#4 Ravens top #3 Morningside in Top 25 clash in Atchison to open season

It what could easily be considered and championship-level game in a season opener, No. 4 Benedictine Football took the series lead over No. 3 Morningside University with a 38-34 win.

Benedictine opened the scoring on their first possession. Xavier Ugorji scored on a 24-yard rush, followed by a Christian Klobe point after to stake the Ravens to an early lead. Morningside followed with a pair of touchdowns, a 35-yard pass from Zack Chevalier to Drew Sellon and a 20-yard rush by Jaylen Burch, to take a 14-7 lead.

It took Benedictine just nine seconds in the second quarter to tie the game. Kameron Dover caught a 59-yard pass from Jackson Dooley to pull the Ravens even early in the quarter.&nbsp;Klobe capped off the scoring in the first half with a 43-yard field goal as the Ravens shutout the Mustangs to take a 17-14 lead into halftime.

The third quarter started with the two teams trading long touchdown plays. Morningside regained the lead with a 49-yard screen pass inside the first two minutes. On the Ravens first play from scrimmage, Dooley connected with Titan Osburn who took off down the Morningside sideline for a 70-yard touchdown reception 21 seconds after Morningside scored.

The Mustangs did regain the lead, a 17 yd pass from Chevalier to Sellon, but the point after failed to pull back ahead by three points, 27-24. They held the Ravens in check to keep the lead until Benedictine picked off Chevalier for the second time with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. Isaiah Hasten returned his interception for 34 yards to set the Ravens offense up for their next touchdown. Dooley hit Joseph Lagafuaina for an eight yard touchdown to put Benedictine back in front 31-27 with just over one minute left in the third.

Morningside took back the lead on a six yard rushing touchdown by&nbsp;Chevalier with 6:39 left in the game and forced Benedictine to punt on their next possession. The Ravens defense held the Mustang to a three and out, getting the ball back at their own 22 with 3:30 left in the game, setting up their final drive eventually capping off a 13-play, 79-yard drive with a Dooley keeper to take a 38-34 lead that proved to be the game-winning touchdown.

Dooley finished with 280 yards on 20 of 37 passing with 3 touchdowns. Ugorji led the Ravens rushing with 91 yards on 14 carries while Dalton Witherspoon added 58 yards on 10 carries. Osburn led the Raven receivers with 93 yards and a touchdown on three catches.

The Ravens (1-0) will hit the road for Week 1 of the regular season, taking on defending NAIA Champs, and No. 1-ranked Grand View University, in Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday at 12.&nbsp;

Jalon Daniels airs it out as Kansas dominates Wagner in Friday clash

 Jalon Daniels threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns despite playing just one drive in the second half and Kansas defeated Wagner 46-7 as the Jayhawks opened their season with a second straight win.

The Kansas defense held Wagner to 18 yards of offense in the first quarter and built a 14-0 lead on the strength of two Daniels touchdown passes. Daniels found DeShawn Hanika uncovered for a four-yard scoring strike to cap off KU's first drive, which covered 50 yards in six plays. Two drives later, Daniels hit Emmanuel Henderson on a nine-yard slant route to put the Jayhawks up 14-0 with 3:12 to play in the first quarter. 

Daniels threw his third touchdown pass of the contest on the Jayhawks next drive, finding Cam Pickett wide open across the middle for a 20-yard score to go up 22-0 early in the second quarter after Carson Bruhn ran in the two-point conversion.&nbsp; Daniel Hishaw scored his first touchdown of the season with a 20-yard run that put the Jayhawks up 29-0 with 5:19 to play in the half.

Wagner got on the board with a 45-yard touchdown pass on the next drive, cutting KU's lead to 29-7 at halftime. 

The Jayhawks struck again early in the third quarter, needing just two plays to cover 75 yards as Daniels connected on a deep ball to Henderson for a 62-yard score to go up 36-7 less than a minute into the half. Laith Marjan added a 27-yard field goal later in the third to give Kansas a 39-7 advantage at the end of three.

Kansas added their final score in the fourth quarter as Harry Stewart III scored his first career touchdown from one yard out.

Henderson hauled in six of Daniels' passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas (2-0). Daniel Hishaw rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown, all in the first half.

Kansas outgained Wagner 623-143, including 285-53 on the ground and 346-90 through the air. The Jayhawks had 32 first downs, compared to just six for Wagner.

Kansas (2-0) returns to action on Saturday as the Jayhawks travel to Columbia to take on Missouri (1-0) at 2:30.&nbsp; Pregame will air at 1:30pm on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

The game reignites one of the oldest rivalries in college football, dating back to 1891, and was last played in 2011.

Late score helps lift Kansas State past North Dakota

Avery Johnson engineered an 81-yard drive and threw a six yard touchdown pass to running back Joe Jackson with 42 seconds remaining, and the Kansas State Wildcats held off first-time starting quarterback Jerry Kaminski and North Dakota for a 38-35 nail-biting victory at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

After both teams went three and out on their opening possessions, Kansas State had to convert twice on 4th-and-1 to get into the red zone on their second. Both of those conversions went for big gains, the second being a 38-yard completion from Johnson to Will Swanson. Stuck on 4th down again, K-State had to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Luis Rodriguez.

The Wildcat defense promptly gave up plays of 12, 27, and 35 yards, setting up 1st-and-goal at the one yard line. North Dakota's Grant Tylutki fumbled into the end zone, but Kaminski recovered in the end zone to take the lead.&nbsp; Johnson responded with a 44-yard touchdown to Jayce Brown on the next drive to give Kansas State the lead back.

Later in the game, the Hawks exploded for 82 yards, getting to the Wildcat one yard line.&nbsp; On the next two plays Kaminski completed passes at the line of scrimmage which resulted in no yardage, setting up 3rd-and-goal. Kaminski eventually kept the ball himself from the pistol to retake the lead.

The Wildcats took the lead back thanks to a very smart decision on Johnson’s part to throw on a scramble for a first down instead of running with it himself.&nbsp; Johnson fired a 30-yard pass to Jaron Tibbs that was tipped and almost intercepted, but Tibbs kept his eye on the ball and snagged it for the go-ahead score.

Near the end of the first half, a 16 yard touchdown rush by Sawyer Seidl, gave North Dakota a 21-17 lead that they carried into the halftime break, and would also come out receiving the second half kickoff.&nbsp; However, the Wildcats forced a&nbsp; three and out to open the third quarter, and then methodically marched downfield. ending with DeVon Rice running in on the outside for a nine yard score to get Kansas State back on top.&nbsp;

After the Wildcats defense forced another three and out, eight plays later, Rice plunged up the middle for 13 yards and another touchdown, giving Kansas State a 31-21 lead.&nbsp;

A punt opened the fourth quarter, and North Dakota put together some second-half offense. After converting on 4th-and-8, Kaminski hit Korey Tai for a 22-yard score to make it 31-28, and after the Cats went three and out, a pass interference call on Zashon Rich on a deep ball gave North Dakota the ball at the 30, and three plays later Seidl ran it in from 20 yards out, giving the Hawks a 35-31 lead with 4:19 to go in the game.

Late in the game, Johnson rambled free for a 25-yard gain, and then tossed to Jackson who scored from six yards out on the following play. With 42 seconds left, K-State had the lead again scoring the final points they would need.&nbsp; Rich atoned for his earlier pass interference with a brilliant breakup over the middle as the Wildcat defense forced 4th-and-10 from the Hawks 47 with 11 seconds to go. Kaminski’s last-gasp pass to Dennis was long, and Kansas State survived, somehow.

Johnson went 28-43 for 318 with three touchdowns and no interceptions, plus 43 yards on the ground. Jackson ran 11 times for 55 yards, while Rice added 40 yards on seven carries. Brown had 109 yards on 12 catches and a touchdown.

Next up,&nbsp;Kansas State (1-1) hosts Army (0-1) on Saturday.&nbsp; Kickoff will be at 6pm and the game will air on ESPN.

Homers help back strong start from McGreevy as Cards win 4-2

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to help lift the Kansas City Royals over the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Saturday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Pinch-hitter Tyler Tolbert drew a seven-pitch walk from Tyler Holton, and Witt Jr followed that connecting for his 20th home run of the season, a 427-foot shot to dead center. Witt, who singled earlier in the game, extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

The Tigers took the lead in the third inning on Gleyber Torres’ sharp, two-out single. Detroit is 55-17 when scoring first.&nbsp; But, Maikel Garcia tied it in the fourth inning with his 15th home run of the season.

Lucas Erceg struck out one in a 1-2-3 eighth inning, earning the win and improving to 6-3 on the season, before Carlos Estévez worked around Riley Greene’s one-out double in the ninth inning for his 36th save.&nbsp; Making his Royals debut, Stephen Kolek threw six innings and allowed a run and four hits, striking out three.&nbsp; At the plate, Witt Jr was 2-for-4 with the home run and two RBI's.&nbsp; Michael Massey was 2-for-3.

With Seattle's 4-3 loss to Cleveland, Kansas City moved within two games of the Mariners for the final AL wild-card spot.

High School Football Scoreboard for Aug. 28th-30th

Welcome to the college football roundup, our weekly look at what all of the colleges did in our area in their football matchups.&nbsp; We take a look at Missouri, Northwest Missouri State, Missouri Western, Benedictine, Kansas, Kansas State, and Nebraska.&nbsp;

Normal versions of the college football roundup will come out on Sunday morning, following the weekly college football action.&nbsp; But with three games on Thursday in Week One, let's take a look at the action.&nbsp;

New starting quarterback Beau Pribula shines in Missouri Tigers debut

Coming into a game where the starting quarterback had yet to be decided by Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz, Beau Pribula staked his claim to Missouri’s starting quarterback job with a four-touchdown performance as the Tigers rolled to a 61-6 season-opening thrashing of Central Arkansas.

Missouri opened the scoring on their third offensive play of the game, a 49-yard-deep ball from Pribula to Marquis Johnson, who led the team with 134 yards receiving.&nbsp;

After two consecutive scoring drives ended with field goals for the Tigers, Pribula showed off his running skills with his first rushing touchdown of the day, an impressive 31 yard scamper to the endzone, that started with the quarterback dodging pass rushers before weaving his way all the way for the score.

Missouri took a 26-0 lead into the halftime break after embarking on a 15-play, 99-yard drive capped off by a one yard touchdown pass from Pribula to tight end Brett Norfleet.

Missouri had planned for Pribula to share playing time with redshirt junior Sam Horn, but Horn suffered a knee injury on his first snap of the game. Pribula led a second 99-yard drive on seven plays midway through the third quarter, extending the lead to 40-0 before handing the reins to true freshman Matt Zollers. Zollers finished 3-of-3 passing for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Tigers linebacker Dante McClellan returned an interception for 83 yards with 2:48 remaining in the game to cap the scoring.

Pribula, a transfer portal addition from Penn State, finished 23-of-28 passing for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He notched another 65 yards and two scores on the ground. The Tigers put up 560 yards of offense in the victory.

Running back Ahmad Hardy, the 2024 Sun Belt Conference freshman of the year transfer from Louisiana Monroe, rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Next up the Missouri Tigers (1-0) stay in Columbia&nbsp;renewing their rivalry with Kansas (1-0) at home next Saturday, the first meeting between the historic foes since 2011.

Minnesota State tops Northwest Missouri State to start McMenamin era

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats dropped their season opener at Minnesota State University, 38-14 to start a new era with new Head Coach John McMenamin.

As rain poured down in the first half, Minnesota State scored 21 unanswered points.&nbsp; Quarterback Sam Backer capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive for the Mavericks with a two-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal from the two with 6:19 left in the first quarter.

Northwest ran 10 plays for 30 yards of offense in the first quarter and gained one first down, while Minnesota State ran 20 plays and gained 117 yards with five first downs.

Minnesota State upped its lead to 14-0 on an 11-yard quarterback keeper from Mitchell Thompson with 5:03 left in the second quarter.&nbsp; The Mavericks Amaun Williams thwarted a Bearcat drive with an interception and a 27-yard return to put the ball at the Bearcat 38-yard line with 1:13 left in the half. Minnesota State wasted little time and turned the Bearcat miscue into a 38-yard touchdown pass from Thompson to Watson for a 21-0 halftime lead.

The Mavericks took the second half kickoff and drove 67 yards in 10 plays to take a 28-0 lead with 10:29 left in the third quarter. Minnesota State's Backer tallied his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard score on fourth-and-goal.&nbsp; Minnesota State extended the margin on a 12-yard touchdown toss from Thompson to Nassir Jones with 7:47 remaining in the third quarter. The Mavericks marched 69 yards in eight plays to tally the touchdown.

Northwest marched 70 yards in five plays that was capped by a 20-yard touchdown strike from Zechariah Owens to Trevor Spady with 5:48 left in the third quarter. It was the first career touchdown for both Owens and Spady. The Bearcat score cut the Minnesota State lead to 35-7.&nbsp; The Bearcats crept closer on a 10-yard quarterback keeper from Owens with 2:09 left in the third quarter.&nbsp;

Minnesota State took a 38-14 advantage following a 24-yard field goal by Connor Fournier. The field goal put an end to an 11-play, 84-yard drive with 11:16 left in the fourth quarter.

&nbsp;Owens passed for a team-high 160 yards and rushed for a team-best 44 yards. Owens accounted for both of Northwest's touchdowns with a throw and a run.

The Bearcats (0-1) will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 6, taking on&nbsp; Washburn in Topeka, Kan.&nbsp;

Late interception seals Nebraska win over Cincinnati at Arrowhead

Dylan Raiola threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and Malcolm Hartzog Jr. picked off Brendan Sorsby's pass in the end zone with 34 seconds left, preserving Nebraska's 20-17 victory over Cincinnati at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Bearcats actually led 3-0 early and were still within 6-3 late in the first half when they made a crucial mistake.

Despite his offense going nowhere, Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield tried pushing the ball downfield on first-and-10 at its own 19 with 1:02 left before the break. Sorsby completed a short pass to Caleb Goodie, but the ball popped loose and was recovered by the Huskers, who needed just three plays to punch it into the end zone with a five yard touchdown pass from Raiola to Nyziah Hunter.&nbsp;

Instead of trailing by a field goal, the Bearcats headed to the locker room trailing 13-3 — a seemingly insurmountable deficit given they had managed 20 yards passing and 81 yards of total offense over the first 30 minutes.

Cincinnati fought to get back in it in the second half, though. It stopped the Huskers on fourth down early in the third quarter, and Sorsby finished the ensuing drive by diving over the pylon for a touchdown rushing for a seven yard score. And when Nebraska answered with a touchdown of its own, a three yard touchdown pass from Raiola to Dane Key, Sorsby needed just three and a half minutes to drive the Bearcats 75 yards and get within 20-17 with 7:15 left scoring on a one yard touchdown run.

The Bearcats got the ball back with about two minutes to go, but Hartzog made the clinching play in the final minute.

Emmett Johnson had 108 yards rushing while&nbsp; Key and Hunter had touchdown catches for the Huskers with Hunter leading with 65 receiving yards and Key catching for 51 yards.

Next up,&nbsp;Nebraska (1-0) plays its home opener against Akron on September 6th.

 </figure>Coming into a game where the starting quarterback had yet to be decided by Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz, Beau Pribula staked his claim to Missouri’s starting quarterback job with a four-touchdown performance as the Tigers rolled to a 61-6 season-opening thrashing of Central Arkansas.  </figure>The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats dropped their season opener at Minnesota State University, 38-14 to start a new era with new Head Coach John McMenamin.As rain poured down in the first half, Minnesota State scored 21 unanswered points.&nbsp; Quarterback Sam Backer capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive for the Mavericks with a two-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal from the two with 6:19 left in the first quarter.Northwest ran 10 plays for 30 yards of offense in the first quarter and gained one first down, while Minnesota State ran 20 plays and gained 117 yards with five first downs.Minnesota State upped its lead to 14-0 on an 11-yard quarterback keeper from Mitchell Thompson with 5:03 left in the second quarter.&nbsp; The Mavericks Amaun Williams thwarted a Bearcat drive with an interception and a 27-yard return to put the ball at the Bearcat 38-yard line with 1:13 left in the half. Sonny Gray put together seven strong innings for the St. Louis Cardinals, but the Redbirds bats went quiet, and the Pittsburgh Pirates took a lead in the four game series winning 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Busch Stadium

The Cardinals took the lead for Gray in the second inning&nbsp;Pedro Pagés hitting an RBI single to drive in Masyn Winn.&nbsp; But in the sixth inning, former Cardinal Tommy Pham gave the Pirates the lead for good on a two RBI single, scoring Jared Triolo and Spencer Horwitz for the only runs they would need to win the game.&nbsp;

Gray fell to 12-7 with the loss pitching seven innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.&nbsp; At the plate,&nbsp;Pagés led the way going 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Cardinals had just four hits in the game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

St. Louis and Pittsburgh wrap up their series tomorrow.&nbsp; Miles Mikolas (6-10, 5.17 ERA) takes the mound for the Cardinals against Braxton Ashcraft (4-2, 2.70 ERA) for the Pirates.&nbsp; First pitch is at 1:15pm with coverage being joined at 1:05 on KY 102 (102.5 FM).&nbsp;

Despite strong outing from Gray, Cards bats go quiet in 2-1 loss to Pirates

Ryan Bergert earned his first win since being acquired by the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline, and the Royals offense exploded for 16 hits with two home runs and five doubles on way to a 12-1 series clinching win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday evening.&nbsp;

After the White Sox took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with their lone run, a solo home run by Andrew Benintendi.&nbsp; The Royals took the lead in the fifth, putting up eight runs, first tying the game on a solo lead off home run by Salvador Perez.&nbsp; Following the home run, Adam Frazier singled before the next two batters were retired, and Kansas City put together six hits and two walks before the final out of the inning.

With two outs, and Frazier on first, Kyle Isbel singled to move Frazier to third, and&nbsp;Mike Yastrzemski walked to load the bases before Bobby Witt Jr's two RBI single gave the Royals the lead, driving in Frazier and Isbel, with Witt Jr moving to second base.&nbsp; Vinnie Pasquantino drove in both Yastrzemski and Witt Jr with another single, and after Maikel Garcia walked, Perez in his second at bat of the inning hit a bases clearing double scoring Pasquantino and Garcia.&nbsp; Frazier followed that with a double of his own to bring home Perez for the final run of the inning, putting Kansas City up 8-1.&nbsp;

Yastrzemski added three more runs in the sixth inning with a three run home run, scoring Michael Massey and Isbel.&nbsp; The final Kansas City run came in the eighth inning with an RBI single from Garcia driving in Yastrzemski after his one out double earlier in the inning.&nbsp;

Bergert improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, pitching six innings and giving up one run on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.&nbsp; At the plate, Frazier was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.&nbsp; Perez was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, while Yastrzemski was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, a walk, and three RBIs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas City is off on Thursday and return to Kauffman Stadium on Friday hosting Detroit.&nbsp; Seth Lugo (8-6, 3.99 ERA) takes the mound for the Royals against Chris Paddack (5-11, 4.98 ERA) for the Tigers.&nbsp; First pitch is at 7:10pm, pregame coverage on Friday beginning at 6:30 on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).&nbsp;

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice will not have to wait until late September to find out his punishment for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy after being charged for his part in a 2024 offseason multi car crash.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Rice has accepted a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, sources say, and will start serving the suspension at the beginning of the season.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Rice&nbsp;had been scheduled for a disciplinary hearing on Sept. 30.&nbsp; Sue L. Robinson, the former U.S. district judge who serves as the disciplinary officer jointly appointed by the NFL and NFL Players Association, was scheduled to hear Rice's case. The only other NFL disciplinary hearing she has presided over was Deshaun Watson's in 2022.

By accepting the NFL's suspension, Rice will miss games the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil, the Philadelphia Eagles, the New York&nbsp;Giants, the Baltimore&nbsp;Ravens, the Jacksonville&nbsp;Jaguars, and the Detroit Lions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rice will be eligible to return to the Chiefs ahead of their game against the Las Vegas Raiders. 

In a rare scenario Tuesday, the Chiefs kept eight receivers, Rice, Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton, Nikko Remigio, Jason Brownlee and rookie Jalen Royals on their initial 53-man roster. The Chiefs did this in case Rice agrees to a shortened suspension with the league, one that is different from what the NFL initially wanted, which was at least an eight-game punishment.

Chiefs WR Rice to miss six games as NFL hands down punishment

 Henry Davis homered, Bryan Reynolds hit a pair of doubles and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium evening up the three game series between the NL Central foes.

Davis hit his sixth home run of the season in the third inning to give Pittsburgh an 8-0 lead.

Nolan Gorman hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, his 13th of the season in the fourth inning.&nbsp; Willson Contreras drove in the Redbirds only other run of the game on a groundout in the sixth inning, scoring Lars Nootbaar.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Contreras was suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount for his tirade during the St. Louis Cardinals' 7-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, but informed Major League Baseball he will appeal the suspension, which means it will not take effect immediately. He was in the lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Pirates.

Contreras threw a bat that mistakenly hit Cardinals hitting coach Brant Brown and tossed bubble gum on the field after he was ejected. Manager Oliver Marmol also was tossed during an animated argument with the umpires after a called third strike in the seventh inning.

Contreras said he didn't understand why he was thrown out of the game. He said he argued balls and strikes with plate umpire Derek Thomas but didn't address a specific pitch and didn't say anything disrespectful.

Mitch Keller (6-12) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out nine in six innings for the Pirates, who have won five of six.&nbsp; Andre Pallante took the loss for the Cardinals, falling to 6-12. allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a walk in five innings. He is 0-4 with a 11.65 ERA over 17 innings in his last four starts.

At the plate, Gorman was 1-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs.&nbsp; Alec Burleson and&nbsp;Iván Herrera also had one hit each as the Cardinals managed just five baserunners overall against the Pirates in the loss.

Royals late rally fuels comeback 5-4 win over White Sox

Kansas State alum and Maryville's Serena Sundell is getting another shot at the WNBA.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sundell was one of 16 basketball players who were invited to WNBA Draft Night in New York, but she fell lower than expected and was ultimately 26th overall by the Seattle Storm. Sundell, who is Kansas State’s all-time assists leader and was widely seen as one of the top playmakers in the class, was waived before the season’s start and has yet to appear in a regular-season WNBA game.

Before being waived from the Storm, Sundell appeared in one preseason game and struggled in her 20 minutes, tallying 1 point (0-3 FG), 1 assist, and 4 turnovers.&nbsp;Now though, she will get her WNBA opportunity.&nbsp; 

Sundell signed a seven-day hardship contract with the Dallas Wings, the team announced on Tuesday morning. The signing comes in the wake of a season-ending injury to rookie guard JJ Quinerly, who suffered a sprained ACL last week. As such, Sundell will be available for Wednesday’s game against the Connecticut Sun.

Last month, Sundell played for the 2025 USA 3×3 Women’s Nations League Team in Chile, helping the team win the Americas Conference Title.

&nbsp;Alec Burleson hit a game-ending solo homer with two out in the ninth inning, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night at Busch Stadium.

Burleson drove an 87 mph slider from Dennis Santana (4-5) deep to center for his 16th homer. It was his fourth hit of the night.&nbsp; It was the first run allowed by Santana since Aug. 6. The right-hander surrendered three hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings over his previous six appearances.

Over his last 10 games, Burleson is 17 for 43 with five extra-base hits and eight RBI.

Willson Contreras had two RBI for St. Louis, which had dropped eight of 11. Michael McGreevy permitted four runs and six hits in six innings.

Bryan Reynolds and Spencer Horwitz hit back-to-back homers for Pittsburgh in the third.

St. Louis grabbed the lead with five runs in the fifth. Contreras hit a tying two-run single and scored on Nolan Gorman's double against Andrew Heaney. Thomas Saggese made it 6-4 with an RBI single.

Nick Gonzales got one back for Pittsburgh with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Ronny Simon hit a tying RBI double off Riley O’Brien (2-0) in the ninth.

Contreras and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol were ejected in the seventh after arguing a called third strike.

Burleson homers for Cardinals walkoff winner 7-6 over Pirates

The Kansas City Royals&nbsp; managed just two hits, and three baserunners overall on a night where St. Joseph's Noah Cameron also struggled on the mound as the Royals fell to the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Monday night in the opener of a three game series

Chicago scored three runs on four hits in the first inning. Edgar Quero hit a shot into the gap in left-center field to score Chase Meidroth from first to open the scoring. Lenyn Sosa followed with a hit into the right-field gap for back-to-back doubles. Curtis Mead added Chicago’s third double for his third RBI of the season and a 3-0 lead.

Cameron, Royals offense falter in 7-0 shutout loss to White Sox

Willson Contreras homered and Alec Burleson's two-run single highlighted a five-run second inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Thursday night.

Trailing 1-0 going into the second, the Cardinals got run-scoring hits from Nathan Church and Lars Nootbaar before another run scored on a wild pitch and Burleson drove in two runs with a single to right field.

Tampa Bay's Yardy Diaz hit a two-run homer in the third. It was his 17th homer at Steinbrenner Field and 21st of the season overall. Ivan Herrera added an RBI single in the fourth for the Cardinals and Contreras hit his 18th homer of the season in the seventh off Bryan Baker.

Sonny Gray earned the win, improving to 12-6 on the season, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings, with six strikeouts and a walk. Kyle Leahy, Matt Svanson and JoJo Romero, who earned his fourth save, combined to limit Tampa Bay to one run and five hits the rest of the way.

St. Louis and Tampa continue their series tomorrow.&nbsp; Miles Mikolas (6-9, 4.99) takes the mound for the Cardinals against Adrian Houser (6-4, 2.67 ERA) for the Rays.&nbsp; First pitch is at 6:35pm with coverage beginning around 6:25 on KY 102 (102.5 FM).
